How J. V. R. Ravikanth of VJIM, Hyderabad bagged placement through a National level process involving 2000 candidates?

Mechanical engineer J. V. R. Ravikanth of VJIM, Hyderabad, one of the top PGDM schools of Hyderabad had four years of work experience as a Sales Engineer with a manufacturing company. But he believes that his professional journey was inadequate as he didn’t even understand the concepts of sales and marketing. Doing his PGDM at VJIM, Hyderabad helped him grasp the concepts, get practical exposure and reposition himself in the industry. The confidence helped him ace the National level placement process for a noted brand like Berger Paints.

Ravikanth was chosen as a Sales officer trainee amongst 2000 participants from all over the country. He talks to us about the rigorous placement process and how he came out trumps.

Stealing the show in National level placements

The placement for a renowned brand not only had aspirants from all over the country competing but also included four demanding rounds. The written test was followed by a Group discussion with company representatives, an interview with a panel including GM – Marketing & HR Manager, and video conference interview with VP (Marketing), Area sales manager, HR Head & one HR executive.

If that wasn’t intimidating enough, Ravikanth reveals the unique nature of each of the rounds. “The GD focused on logical questions and decision analysis where they were looking at our body language, communication skills and ability to analyze situations. The first interview also required us to know the basics of marketing while the video conference focused on our selling skills and communications. I felt I had the right background to make an impression,” he says.

How he got his prep on at VJIM

According to Ravikanth, VJIM, Hyderabad enhanced his understanding of various industries through class assignments, term papers seminars and conferences. He also talks about his SIP with GMR Hyderabad International Airport, which boosted his learning. “My project was on the Business excellence model of GHIAL. Sometimes more than the brand of SIP company, it’s the experience you get is crucial for your future career,” he says confidently.

Ravikanth admits that he has gained this confidence with his PGDM, and wants to use it in his work space to develop an understanding of the processes and become indispensible to the company. Participating in Chrysalis, YUVA – Challenge, winning a tagline competition are all experiences that he cherishes deeply.

“These experiences make PGDM at the institute all about holistic learning. It’s important to try and understand the concepts of management so that you won’t be confused in front of the interviewer. You should also keep up with the latest trends through ET, TED Talks, Shark Tank and other avenues to give yourself the edge,” are his final words of advice.

VJIM’s beating 4 top teams and lifting the trophy of Yuva 2016

The professionalism is built on the concrete initiatives and practicality stemming out from the relevant textbook concepts. Reiterating this idea, the team from ViganaJyothiInstitute of Management, Hyderabad’s Salesforce made headlines just a few days back by winning the title of YUVA 2016. Ala Karthikeya, G SaiJanardhanRao, K Sai Vijay, and RamprasadVarun were the members onboard this team.

14292252_1293896530655635_5730211820782798770_n

When asked about their strategy and the winning formula, they explained by saying “We made sure the team had a balance between people who actually were good at sales, ones who can relate the textbook concepts to the process and ones who could present well. There wasn’t any room for emotions here. It was completely professional. It was rather a co-incidence that we thought of each other’s names when the contest was announced.”

They explained the Yuva Challenge as a sales activity offering a first-hand experience to the management students from leading b-schools. They were given a task to sell a bundle of ITC products within three hours including the handing over of money to the employee of ITC present on the campus. And, this was just the beginning as more was to follow.

“After this, we had to make a PowerPoint presentation of the learning and experiences and send a soft copy of the same to the company. Based on the quality of Presentations, 4 Top teams were shortlisted and we had to face IPE-Hyderabad in the final presentation round on campus” told Ala Karthikeya from the VJIM team.

The products allotted to every group were almost similar so the competition was about planning a strategy that clicked on time and gave the winners an edge over the competitors. In this regard, VJIM students truly displayed an innovative streak that they learnt from their on-campus training. They opted for outbound sales. Although the sales at the end of the day were low, yet they leveraged their experience to present their achievements in a unique manner.

When asked about the most interesting part of this challenge, Karthikeya said “Being a 100% outbound sale, the challenge was to convince prospects whom we never met or interacted with. Not just for once, but make sure, he will get converted into a loyal ITC customer, nothing but the Basic rule of sales like communication and patience.”

Throughout this rigorous sales challenge, they shared some light moments as well. They credited the success of this challenge to their mentor Prof. K Suresh who guided them in preparing an excellent PowerPoint Presentation.

When asked about the takeaway of this activity, they unanimously shared their views by stating “We learnt the importance of good communication, making the right choices and presenting the learning in a unique way. In all these endeavors, what we learnt at VJIM truly paid off.”

Integration of Human Resource and Financial Management – A key to Success of the Company

“You save tremendous amount of time, energy and money when you tap into the human resources of a business at every level.”  – Stephen Covey

Human Resources and Financial Management are viewed as drastically different from each other since time immemorial. HR Department with its motto, “People are the greatest asset” has always come in conflict with the Finance Department with their norm of “Cash is King”. But in reality, these two departments are “Tom and Jerry” of the company. They can’t live with each other and can’t live without each other. They both want the same thing in the end that is a successful and healthy company.

research

In reality, a strong relationship between Finance and HR Department is the key to Business Success. Many Business Schools have begun to inculcate these changing norms in their Post Graduate Diploma Courses in India. A sense of cooperation and respect for each other’s work is taught to both the disciplines. This could go a long way in creating capable and talented managers.

HR Departments need Finance department to access their programs’ return on investment and Finance Department need HR Department in achieving higher corporate earnings. A healthy and cooperative relationship between these two leads to positive business outcomes. A strong relationship between the two leads to improvement in employee productivity and engagement, and higher corporate earnings.

Both the departments have good and bad in them. The dream of a happy and successful company can be achieved  if Finance learn the goods of HR and vice versa.

Things Finance can learn from HR

Finance people are not very popular in  the company due to their tough decisions that often poses a negative impact on the morale of an employee. Finance can learn two most important things from HR:

  1. Not everything can be measured in terms of profit and loss. It can be difficult to quantify a program or benefit designed for boosting employee morale in terms of money.
  2. The company is run by humans and not machines. Finance managers are tasked with making difficult decisions in order to ensure the constant growth of the company. If HR managers are included in long term strategic plans, the possibility of their success would increase manifold.

Things HR can learn from Finance

HR departments are dealing with the human aspect of the organisation. They deal with the biggest cost element of the company, the employees. HR can learn two things from Finance:

  1. HR need to quantify personnel investment. After all enhanced productivity or sales or brand value are the ultimate goals.
  2. HR Managers should learn how to make use of People Data in influencing decisions relating to business goals and performance metrics.

A Partnership for A Happy and Successful Company

Successful collaboration and cooperation between CFOs and CHROs can be achieved when members of both departments put time and effort to understand and learn from each other. Together, solid finance and HR teams can develop strong and lasting partnerships that can help achieve a faster and efficient growth.
